Insects
Insects can convert feed into protein, but the species, substrate, processing, cost and intended use make the difference.
Insect-derived ingredients for food and feed
Insects are already used in some feed and food markets. The case for them is often framed around efficient feed conversion, but the headline alone can mislead: the feed itself has an environmental footprint, and drying or processing can require substantial energy.
Species, rearing conditions and permitted substrates matter. A comparison should also account for the product that insect meal replaces. Replacing fishmeal in feed is a different question from replacing a food people currently eat.
Consumer acceptance, regulation and economics influence how much insect protein reaches diets. A technically possible ingredient is not automatically a widely adopted one.
